PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: Several environment organizations have come together for the conservation of Ramnadi, a stream originating in Bavdhan, and other tributaries to ensure that fresh water flows into to the Mula river instead of sewage water.

Shailendra Patil, founder-member, Jaldevata Seva Abhiyan, said, “The 18-km-long Ramnadi is one of the tributaries of Mula river. It originates in Bhukum and passes through Bavdhan, Pashan, Someshwarwadi and other areas to meet the river in Baner. There are 17 natural springs that merge into Ramnadi at various spots. Due to rapid urbanization in the past four to five decades, these streams have been encroached on. Also almost all springs have become small ponds because they are not getting enough groundwater.”

The only spring which yields large volume of water and travels around 2km to finally meet Ramnadi is in Bavdhan village. “This spring yields one lakh litre water per day. Around 2,000 people living in surrounding areas use it for drinking and other purposes. We have tested the water of this spring and found that it is potable,” he said.

A puja of the spring water will be conducted on Sunday in Bavdhan to create public awareness for conservation of this natural water, said Patil, adding that such streams should be preserved and given the status of natural heritage.

Shailaja Deshpande, founder-member and director, Jeevit Nadi, said, “Patil has mapped the natural springs and streams in the village that supply water to Ramnadi and identified those alive. We work towards rejuvenating rivers. So, we are also participating in the drive to rejuvenate the springs and streams in Bavdhan.”
