PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: Once is not enough. The foundation stone laying ceremony of the first gas-based crematorium at Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) would be conducted again on Monday.
With allegations swirling around the ‘hasty’ foundation stone laying ceremony on Wednesday, another ceremony in the presence of all the elected members and senior cantonment officials has been planned. “The fresh ceremony will be held on Monday in the presence of all the elected members and senior cantonment officials,” said Kamlesh Chaskar, chairman, health committee, KCB.

Amol Jagtap, chief executive officer, KCB, said, “The contractor wanted to conduct the ceremony on Akshay Trtiya. But I have no knowledge of another ceremony on Monday.”

Dhiraj Mohan, president, KCB, and Amol Jagtap, chief executive officer, KCB, were not present at the foundation stone laying ceremony on Wednesday.

Abhay Sawant, vice-president, KCB, Kamlesh Chaskar, chairman, health committee, KCB, and member Manish Anand conducted the foundation stone laying, or bhoomipoojan, at Khadki on Wednesday in the presence of some cantonment officials.

Manish Anand, the elected member of the Congress in KCB, said, “Bhoomipoojan was conducted on Wednesday for the construction of the first gas-based crematorium at Khadki. Local residents will be able to cremate bodies in an eco-friendly manner. The cantonment will take a decision on cremation charges but they will be affordable to encourage more people to use the facility.”

KCB has awarded a five-year contract for installation, operation and maintenance of the gas-based crematorium at a cost of Rs 4.16 crore.
